Vote for Brixton Community Base to win a £5,000 Aviva Community Fund Award

Brixton Community Base needs your help to secure funding to employ a marketing and social media worker to support and promote our community initiatives and projects. We have applied to the Aviva Community Fund and are asking our friends and supporters to vote for us to ensure we can continue to work with some of the most disadvantage people in Brixton.

The deadline for voting is 21 November. You receive 10 votes and can choose which projects you wish to support however we would love it if you could give BCB all 10! We need to secure at least 1,000 votes to advance to the next stage.

You will have to register for an account and log in but this is swift and easy. Thank you so much for your support.

Free Drama Workshops

Brixton Youth Theatre autumn classes for young people between the ages of 13 to 21  are now being held every Friday from 6 until 8pm throughout the autumn. And the classes are free.

You can find BYT at Brixton Community Base, Talma Road London SW2 1AS. To join them call 07960 964558 or you can email

The programme includes some jam-packed workshops of acting and drama games, improvisation and text work, masterclasses and theatre visits.

The project is led by joint Artistic Directors Max Gold and David Baker. Between them they have a wealth of experience as actors and directors in theatre, film and television. As well as performing with leading theatres such as the RSC and the National, they have created and run numerous projects for young people throughout London, including at the Lyric Hammersmith, where David Baker was Director of Creative Learning and an Artistic Associate.

They have been involved in feature film casting and worked on set with young actors in films such as Thor 2. Brixton Youth Theatre members they have coached have won places at colleges ranging from RADA to the Brit School.
Brixton Youth Theatre also benefits from a wide network of theatre, film and TV professionals who will lead guest workshops and projects and will provide a direct link into the industry.

GoodGym Lambeth

On Tuesday 10 October we were visited by the runners from GoodGym Lambeth,   They are committed to running and stopping off to support local people and organisations.  We had 40 runners popping into the building and painting our Lower Hall.  They worked extremely hard and fast and when one team had completed a wall, off they trotted for a swift run around the block.  Thanks so much to GoodGym and especially Katie for supporting us.

Brixton Design Trail

From March to May 2017 Sixteenfeet Productions delivered a series of creative writing workshops as part of the ‘Lambeth Vintage Voices’ project. The sessions were fun, challenging and explored participants’ expe- riences of living, working and bringing up families in Brixton over decades.

‘Lovers’ Telephone’ presents some of the writings which have been recorded and are presented in Brixton Community Base as part of the 2017 Brixton Design Trail event. Visitors are encouraged to engage by listen- ing and sharing personal histories of Brixton.

This event has been designed by Brixton Community Base and Variant Of ce:

Brixton Community Base is an arts-orientated community centre providing a base for local groups, which hires space for rehearsals, workshops, evening classes, and meetings. It is an important historical community resource that provides a friendly open collaborative space that brings people together to share learning and experience new activities and make friends.

Variant Of ce is a Brixton based architecture practice that brings together many years of experience in ar- chitecture, design, planning and construction. The ethos of Variant Of ce is rooted in design research, us- er-centricity and a commitment to exploring the ability of space to transform lives and experiences through the careful engagement with both the client’s requirements and sensitivity to the site.

We will be running another series of creative writing and oral history workshops during Winter 2017/Spring 2018. If you would like to share your experiences of living in Brixton, learn new writing skills and make friends please contact Jane at for more information.
